Medelim Portugal

Medelim is a small village in eastern Portugal’s Castelo Branco District , Distrito de Castelo Branco , tucked near the Spanish border north of the Tagus River , Rio Tejo , which feeds out to Lisbon , Lisboa , on the western edge of Portugal. Medelim is located in the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova.

So many of the towns and cities in Portugal have public fountains. Often the water is drinkable. Whether or not, it is always noted on the fountain. Medelim has such a fountain with an inscription reading:

Pare um pouco no caminho
A fazer bem se tem pressa
Dá eternidade ao tempo

English Translation:

Stop a little on your way
To do good if you are in a rush
Give eternity to time
Shelter someone who stumbles!

The verse is a stanza written by the 20th-century Portuguese poet Amândio Correia de Oliveira (often cited in regional periodicals as Amónio Correia de Oliveira), emphasizing kindness, patience, and community support for travelers passing through the village.
